Lahore Traffic Police Quickly Detains Underage Drivers, Filling Jails

In compliance with Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi's urgent directives, the Lahore traffic police has launched a comprehensive crackdown on underage drivers. This initiative comes in the wake of a devastating road accident in the Defence area of Lahore, claiming the lives of six family members.

Over a span of four days, the Lahore traffic police executed a series of operations leading to the apprehension of 1,632 underage drivers, with each facing legal consequences. Simultaneously, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore issued show cause notices to six sector in-charges, citing concerns about ineffective enforcement during the crackdowns.

The urgency of Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi's province-wide crackdown on underage drivers is rooted in a recent incident where an underage driver caused a fatal accident, resulting in the loss of six lives in Lahore. Naqvi stressed the need for impartial and stringent actions against underage drivers, directing the Inspector General (IG) Punjab, Chief Commissioner of Police (CCPO), and all Regional Police Officers (RPOs) to submit daily reports on measures taken against underage drivers.

Highlighting the grave dangers posed by underage drivers not only to themselves but also to others on the road, Naqvi issued a stern appeal to parents. He urged them to prevent their underage children from operating vehicles or motorcycles, emphasizing the responsibility of ensuring road safety.

It is crucial to note that the tragic car accident in Lahore’s Defence Phase 7 involved a family returning home after visiting relatives. Afnan Shafqat, a teenage boy, deliberately collided with the family's vehicle near a roundabout, leading to tragic and fatal outcomes.

The Lahore traffic police's rapid response underscores the commitment to ensuring public safety and preventing further tragedies caused by underage driving. Parents and guardians are urged to play a vital role in curbing this perilous trend by enforcing responsible driving habits among young individuals. The crackdown serves as a proactive measure to protect lives and maintain road safety across the province.
